Welcome to 2020!
The beginning of a new year and a new decade. New beginnings are always a good thing.
I decided that one of this year’s “resolutions” is to continue with a regular blog as well as podcast. I’m still working on the technical stuff for the podcast (sometimes tech is my friend and sometimes it is not). I want to bring you the reader more relevant information, advice, tips, suggestions to help you plan for your upcoming year.
So, here’s my first blog of 2020. Today, it's about us and where we're headed so that we can take you in the right direction, too.
I think this is going to be an interesting year for me and certainly “us”. When I say “us” I am referring to both the company and the promotional products industry.
In respect to me/us – 2019 brought some challenges and I personally learned some valuable lessons. We went from a 1 man show, to a 6 man show, down to a 3 man show. I find it interesting that the time I took to grow the company and bring on some sales people, took more effort and resources than I thought. In fact, for a few months, I spent more time dealing with issues from our people than I did on sales and growth. Those were some very costly months. Lesson learned.
Now it’s time to plan for 2020 and the year ahead. It was actually time about 2 weeks ago, but sometimes I do procrastinate. It happens.
I am determined to focus on growth and would like to bring a few people on board, but I’m going to do it differently this time. I will focus on growth of customers and sales and then back fill the spots I need with more sales support and admin people. Not the other way around.
I also think it’s time to work a little more on personal development, industry certification and just over all betterment of my skills – and pass that along to the remaining team.
Where we go from here in respect to the growth of our industry, will be interesting. We could be faced with higher prices due to the pending tariff’s. IF that happens. I speculate this whole tariff thing is a bit of a show…but that’s just me. Either way, some suppliers have already used the excuse to already raise some prices, but most haven’t.
I think that this year is the year to really work on growth with the representatives from my suppliers and establish better relationships. I haven’t don’t that in the past and I think that’s another thing that’s missing from our business.
In respect to where products are heading, I believe that the tech products will continue to grow, as well as drinkware. Eco-friendly and the straw movement will continue to move forward and I believe that cannabis products will also rise in popularity. It will be interesting. I will know more after this weekend when I attend the ASI industry show.
Dry topics, I know. But this blog is as much for me as it is for you. This is my first measuring stick for the new year to see if I stay on target and where things go from here.
I’m excited for the new year and I hope you are too.
